The Basingstoke and Deane Canoe Club was formed in 1987 as an initiative by the Borough Council to provide canoe and kayak based recreational activities and amenities for the residents of Basingstoke.
It quickly developed into a fully constituted organisation in its own right. It is affiliated to the Canoe England (the english section of the British Canoe Union) and currently has just over 100 members of all ages. The Club runs activities throughout the year but leans towards recreational paddling, organising regular weekend trips throughout the year as well as an annual trip. These alternate between the Alps, where the white water is more reliable, and the West coast of Scotland for sea kayaking.
Basingstoke and Deane Canoe Club encourages family membership and many non-canoeing family members and friends take part in our trips and social activities. Our members come from all walks of life and include many people from youth groups such as the Scouts and Guides. We have two youth workers as members of our Club.
The Club is run by a group of about twenty volunteers. We have fully qualified BCU coaches in several of the canoeing disciplines and can organise courses and activities to cater for a wide range of abilities, including BCU 3 Star, BCU Aquatic First Aid and Foundation Safety and Rescue Training. We strongly encourage all our volunteers to take the nationally recognised courses in water safety and hold a current Criminal Records Bureau (CRB) check.
