Saturday 24th September

This week we had decided to make completing as much as possible of the landscaping work at the eastern end of the land this autumn a priority, so a work party seemed a good idea.

Some days everything seems to click.  Today was not one of those.

One of the bags of crush gravel had fallen onto the temporary fencing, knocking it to a crazy angle and bending the metal fence panel. Once a tonne of gravel had been shovelled off the fence and spread over the entrance it was possible to dismantle the fence and straighten the damaged panel.  We then spent time clearing and levelling the ground under the fence so it could be re-erected.  The finished job looked better than before, but this was not today's intended task.

After lunch we started on the planned tasks for the day:

  • First we fixed the stockproof wire netting to the repaired post and rail fence between the eastern end of the plot and the towpath.
  • We spread more topsoil in that eastern end: the aim is to have enough to create a seed but not so much that the soil is highly fertile as lower fertility encourages a greater diversity of wildflowers.
  • Areas were marked out for sowing the wildflower mix: we have been sowing 10m2 patches to spread the seed evenly.
  • We sowed the remained of the seed that we currently have: more is on order.
