About one third of the overall plot of land, at the east end of the site, will be cultivated to encourage a wild flower meadow to develop. As we have started to sow this area opportunities have presented themselves to try to encourage more diversity.
Initially we had selected Emorsgate hedgerow mix as an appropriate seed mixture for this area, with a proportion of Emorsgate cornfield annual seeds as a nursery crop. As we have looked around we have identified variety in the habitat and will try a wider range of mixed to suit the variation in habitat:
- The extreme east end is very shaded: we will sow Emorsgate woodland mix in that area
- There are a couple of wet areas, where we can try Emorsgate wetland mix, which is based on the vegetation of traditional water meadows
- Finally we are going to sow the edge next to the car park with Emorsgate tussock grass mixture.
Come next summer we should see how effective this strategy has been.
