Peter Mansell of Basingstoke and Deane Canoe Club was the winner of the Canoe England Volunteer and Recognition Awards 2013 for “Impact on Disability Canoeing”. Colin King, also of Basingstoke and Deane Canoe Club, was runner up in the same category.
Colin and Peter were nominated for their work with students of Treloar School and College. The Canoe Club has been working in partnership with the College to provide weekly kayaking sessions for students.
Peter was nominated for his pivotal role in setting up the weekly kayaking sessions in 2010 and his commitment since. His coaching includes the use of adaptive equipment and well as providing sessions for those with learning or communications difficulties. Peter said, “I really enjoy working with the students and staff at Treloar’s. I admire the perseverance of the students and support from the staff.”
Colin has also been coaching at Treloar School and College since the start of the project, which gives students from a multitude of backgrounds ranging from physical to learning and communication disabilities the opportunity to enjoy kayaking. Colin said, “It is fantastic that we have been recognised by Canoe England in this important category”.
